Route decision
F.P. Journe auction or private sale: what changes the decision?
A public auction can test open demand; a private route can keep the counterparty and terms within a smaller process. Neither route guarantees a better net result.

Direct answer
Compare net terms, not the headline.
Passion Asset Advisory recommends comparing the expected seller net, fees, reserve or offer terms, inspection, exposure, payment timing and failure path. An auction estimate is not a guarantee. A private indication is not a binding offer until written terms identify the counterparty and conditions.
Side-by-side
Public auction and private sale.
When each can fit
Use watch-specific evidence.
A record-setting headline for another generation is not a decision rule for your watch.
Auction can fit when
- The reference has broad, active bidder demand.
- The condition and provenance support public catalogue scrutiny.
- The seller accepts exposure, schedule and unsold-lot risk.
- The reserve and complete cost schedule are agreed in writing.
A private route can fit when
- A credible counterparty or focused buyer group exists.
- The seller wants a narrower disclosure process.
- The written net and conditions matter more than public price discovery.
- The role, counterparty and every Passion Asset Advisory fee are disclosed.

Clear answers
Seller questions.
These answers state the service boundary. Written transaction terms control any engagement.
Is an auction estimate a guaranteed F.P. Journe sale price?
No. An auction estimate guides the sale under the auction house's terms. The lot may sell below, within or above the estimate where permitted, or it may not sell. Read the reserve, fees and withdrawal terms.
Is a private sale always faster than auction?
No. Timing depends on the watch, evidence, inspection, buyer readiness, written conditions and settlement. Passion Asset Advisory does not guarantee a route or timing.
Which route gives the highest seller net?
No route can promise the highest net in advance. Compare a written direct proposal or mandate estimate with the auction reserve, seller commission, other charges, risk of no sale and expected payment path.
Can Passion Asset Advisory advise both buyer and seller?
No. The contract identifies the counterparty, the side represented and every fee. Passion Asset Advisory never advises both sides in the same transaction.
